What is Profhilo?

Profhilo has been creating quite a buzz in the beauty world lately. But what is it and is it right for you? In this article, we’ll tell you more about what it is, how it works and why it may well become one of the most talked-about treatments of 2019.

Profhilo Treatment

Launched in 2016, Profhilo is now taking the UK by storm. Manufactured by Swiss-based company IBSA Pharma, Profhilo is a remodeling product designed to hydrate the skin by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

In short, Profhilo is designed to improve facial structure and skin elasticity by applying the latest, state of the art hyaluronic acid technology. This is perfect for helping combat the general signs of ageing by treating loose or sagging skin as well as dealing effectively with undesirable wrinkles.

Not only does it have great hydration properties, Profhilo also tightens the skin at the same time which gives the treated area a glowing, renewed vigour. As with most treatments that improve overall appearance and lead to a younger-looking complexion, the psychological boost this can give you is also worth a mention too – After all, anything that can boost your self-esteem has surely got to be worth considering. Profhilo is a unique product insofar as it’s the only hyaluronic acid product that’s clinically proven to stimulate both collagen and elastin production.

If you don’t want to take our word for it, you can have a read what the highly respected broadsheet newspaper, The Times has to say about it (you’ll need to have an active subscription to read the full article), describing it as “likely to be huge in 2019”. What’s more, there’s also talk in beauty circles of women travelling to the UK from as far as the USA due to not being able to get the treatment where they live!

Is Profhilo a dermal filler?

The short answer is no. While dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, Profhilo is slightly different. Unlike dermal fillers, it doesn’t actually ‘plump’ or add volume to the skin. Instead, it works in harmony with your body by helping it restore its own natural hyaluronic acid (which decreases as you get older) and it also helps stimulate additional production of collagen and elastin, thus leaving your skin more youthful-looking, tighter and rejuvenated.

In case you’re not aware hyaluronic acid already occurs naturally within your body and is largely responsible for maintaining the skin’s natural moisture level. So in this sense, Profhilo tends to act more as a hydrator rather than act as a simple dermal filler.

Is it painful?

No more so (and perhaps even less) than many of the similar treatments available on the market today. Because the injections take place at a shallow level of the skin, it’s often less painful than comparative treatments and you shouldn’t need any type of anaesthetic.

Are there any side effects?

Because Profhilo is only injected superficially just below the surface of the skin, side effects are rare although as with most types of treatment that involve puncturing the skin, you may experience mild redness, some itching/tenderness or possible bruising at the injection site but these should subside quite quickly. It’s also not recommended if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

What parts of my body can I have Profhilo injections?

This versatile new treatment is suitable for most parts of the upper body including the face, neck, arms and hands. In fact, pretty much any part of the body that’s showing signs of ageing is usually suitable, even your feet or knees.

How long does it take to work?

Results are visible almost immediately and you should notice some improvements shortly after treatment. Even better, because Profhilo contains a unique concentration of hyaluronic acid, the results can also continue to improve over time – Due to its ‘slow release’ properties, it naturally stimulates your body into producing more collagen and elastin. You could almost say that it remodels your skin from the inside out!

How long does Profhilo last?

As with most treatments, this can vary from person to person but as a general rule of thumb you’ll see long-lasting results. Please bear in mind that due to the natural ageing process the results will still appear to fade over time. Because of this, our protocol involves a course of two treatments spaced four weeks apart. The exception to this is those who have more visible skin issues in which case we’d recommend a further treatment four weeks after your second treatment. Once all your initial treatments are complete, you can always return to us again in six to nine months time for ‘boosters’ if you wish.

The procedure

As with all of our treatments, you’ll first have an initial consultation at our Kent clinic to discuss the procedure and determine if it’s right for you. We’ll discuss the treatment and will be happy to answer any questions and alleviate any concerns you may have; it’s always important to us that you feel confident, relaxed and reassured before undergoing any procedure with us. You’ll also need to tell us about any medication you’re taking beforehand (prescribed and/or over the counter) as well as any natural remedies too such as vitamins, oral oils or tablets etc.

Depending on the areas you’d like treating, we’ll note specific, evenly spaced points for injection. This will ensure that you get the most subtle and natural looking results as the Profhilo will be evenly distributed over each treatment area. Furthermore, before undergoing the procedure, you’ll also need to remove all makeup so it’s best if you don’t apply any on the actual day that you visit us. You should also tell us in advance if you’re suffering from any illnesses or infections, including flu, colds or even cold-sores.

Summary

If your skin looks tired and lacks volume/elasticity or you’re concerned about unsightly wrinkles, why not pamper yourself and consider Profhilo as your next treatment. We’ll take great care of you at our Kent clinic and we’re confident that you’ll be delighted with the end results so why not get in touch with us today to arrange an appointment.
